In the Destiny Matrix, the inner and outer self describe two different sides of the personality. The inner self reflects who you are when you can be completely yourself. The outer self, in turn, reflects how others see you and the first impression you make.
The yellow number at the centre of the matrix represents the inner self. It describes the personality traits that usually appear most clearly in close relationships. Family members, a partner or close friends may know this side of you much better than other people do. The inner self is also connected with your comfort zone. It shows which kind of energy feels natural and where you can draw strength when life feels demanding or you lose your sense of direction. It is helpful to return to the energy of your inner self when you feel that you no longer quite recognise yourself. It can offer clues about the activities, surroundings or ways of acting that help you reconnect with yourself. Not every number is mathematically possible in the position of the inner self. The numbers 1, 2, 15, 17, 19 and 21 cannot appear in the yellow area at the centre.
The purple number on the left side of the matrix represents the outer self. It is also known as your personal calling card. It describes how you appear to the outside world and the impression other people may form of you. The outer self is visible in your presence, behaviour, way of speaking and the way you act in different situations. It does not, of course, describe your entire personality, but it is often the side that other people notice first. Any number from 1 to 22 can appear in the outer-self position because this point is based on the day of birth. For example, if you were born on the seventh day of a month, your outer-self number is 7. If you were born on the 25th, the number is reduced by adding its digits together: 2 + 5 = 7.
The inner and outer self do not always look alike. A person may seem calm, thoughtful or reserved on the outside while being much more open, active or emotional in close relationships. Someone may appear strong and independent, yet need a great deal of safety, support and acceptance in their closest relationships. This is why a first impression does not always reveal very much about who a person is when the relationship becomes deeper.
The energies of the Destiny Matrix always have two sides: positive and negative. In balance, an energy appears as strengths, natural ways of acting and constructive qualities. Out of balance, the same energy may become excessive, remain too weak or turn against the person. A number alone therefore does not tell the whole story. You also need to consider how that energy appears in a person's life. The outer self may, for example, create a warm, confident and approachable impression. Out of balance, the same energy may appear as attention-seeking, arrogance or a constant need for approval. Another energy may look calm and thoughtful when balanced, but closed, cold or difficult to approach when out of balance.
Birthdays make this interesting to practise. As the energies of numbers 1–22 become familiar, you can use a new acquaintance's birthday to consider what their outer energy may be like. You can try the same with people you have known for a long time. Does the energy of their birthday match the impression you have formed of them? Does it appear more balanced or out of balance? The purpose is not to put anyone into a box based on a single number. The outer self is only one small part of the complete matrix. Even so, this is an enjoyable way to learn to recognise different energies in practice. Once you begin observing them around you, their meanings also become much easier to remember.
The Destiny Matrix uses energies 1–22. If you are already familiar with the energies of the Tarot's Major Arcana, they are much easier to remember. Every number has its own theme, strengths and out-of-balance expression. Once you learn the basic meanings, you begin to notice them in people's behaviour, presence and ways of acting. General descriptions of all energies from 1 to 22 can be found in this blog.
